US–CHINA TRADE

The Glossary

Goods Trade Deficit

The U.S. goods gap with China: $375B in 2017, $203B in 2025 — and no longer the story.

Definition

The United States has run a goods deficit with China since 1985. It peaked at $418 billion in 2018, fell to $202.7 billion in 2025 as tariffs and re-routing bit, and narrowed further in 2026 on Census data through August. Economists caution that the bilateral balance measures assembly location more than economic benefit: as production moved to Vietnam and Mexico, much of the "decline" reappears as Chinese content inside other countries' exports.

Why it matters

The deficit is simultaneously the war's original justification and its worst scoreboard: tariffs narrowed the bilateral gap while the overall U.S. trade deficit with the world grew.
